Dr. José Irizarry appointed Director of the Hispanic Summer Program November 18, 2003

Dr. José Irizarry, associate professor of Christian education at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC), was appointed the Director of the Hispanic Summer Program (HSP), an ecumenical graduate education program in theology and religion.

The HSP is a prestigious national program sponsored by 38 theological seminaries and university divinity schools in the US, Canada, and the Caribbean, including LSTC and other seminaries of the Association of Chicago Theological Schools (ACTS).   A "seminary without walls," each year HSP provides two-weeks of study and fellowship at one of its sponsoring institutions.   Taught by prominent Hispanic and Latino/a scholars, the program is for Hispanic seminary and religion students, graduates seeking continuing education, and others interested in Hispanic ministries.   Dr. Irizarry was a member of the faculty of HSP the year the program was held at the University of Puerto Rico.

In the course of his three-year, renewable appointment as director, Dr. Irizarry will oversee the academic program of HSP and its administration and management.   Specifically, he will shape the program's educational objectives, select faculty, and serve as academic dean during the two weeks that the program is in session.

Because of this appointment the management office of the program will be located at LSTC.   Zaida Rodriguez has already begun her work as administrator of the program.

Dr. Irizarry, who also serves as Director of the Doctor of Ministry in Mission and Leadership Program at LSTC, expects that his appointment and relocation of the management office to LSTC will increase the seminary's historical commitment to Hispanic ministry.   Since he and HSP will be working jointly with the Hispanic Ministry office at LSTC, those who come to LSTC planning to serve Hispanic communities or who are interested in Hispanic communities will benefit from more extensive academic programs.

Originally from Puerto Rico, Irizarry received the bachelor of arts degree in philosophy, magna cum laude, from the Universidad de Puerto Rico in 1989. He received the master of divinity degree from McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago, and was ordained in the Presbyterian church in 1993.   His doctor of philosophy degree was bestowed by Northwestern University/Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary, Evanston, Illinois. Irizarry has undertaken additional studies at Universita Italiana per Stranieri, Perugia, Italy.   He joined the LSTC faculty in 2000.
