Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago Renowned Preacher Receives Distinguished Grant to Study Congregations in Transition December 1, 2003

Dr. Craig Satterlee Ph.D., assistant professor of homiletics at LSTC and Dean of the Doctor of Ministry in Preaching Program of the Association of Chicago Theological Schools (ACTS), received a grant in excess of $40,000 from the Louisville Institute.

Satterlee's proposal, "Preaching in Times of Congregational Transition," was ranked #1 by the board of the Louisville Institute whose mission is to: "enrich the religious life of American bringing together those who lead religious institutions with those who study them, so that the work of each might stimulate and inform the other."

The distinguished grant will allow Satterlee to invite an ecumenical group of pastor consultants to the LSTC campus in January for a 3-day consultation regarding their concerns for congregations undergoing transition. The study entails feedback from congregational leaders, Spring and Fall 2004 classes at LSTC, and will conclude with a book published by the Alban Institute to report Satterlee's research.

Ordained in 1987, Satterlee has served congregations in New York and Michigan, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame in 2000. He has authored Ambrose of Milan's Method of Mystagogical Preaching and Presiding in the Assembly, currently edits "Preaching Helps" in Currents in Theology and Mission, and frequently contributes articles to The Lutheran. Also a gifted teacher, holding the Axel Jacob and Gerda Maria (Swanson) Carlson Chair in Homiletics at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, Dr. Satterlee describes his ministry as "preparing and renewing women and men to be proclaimers of Jesus Christ."
