On Monday, April 1, Dr. Jeremy Myers, whose research and teaching focus on young adults and theology, will give the 2019 Lutheran Heritage Lecture at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC), 1100 E. 55th St., Chicago. The free public presentation begins at 11:45 a.m. A light lunch will be provided.
Myers will offer a vocational understanding of young people that frees them from the limitations of developmental and economic frameworks. He will show that this understanding of young people necessitates a public church which is a faith community seeking to proclaim good news in the public square for the common good. His interactive presentation will include the communal work of imaging what ministry might look like if shaped these ideas.
The Lutheran Heritage Lecture series is designed to provide a contemporary perspective on the Lutheran tradition.
About the speaker
Jeremy Myers has been teaching at Augsburg University since 2006. His approach to instruction includes a faithful, honest, and critical look at people’s lived realities while simultaneously attempting to seek and proclaim meaning, truth, and hope within the context of that reality. He applies the same approach to his discipline of Theology & Public Leadership, often incorporating insights from sociology, psychology, cultural studies, and ritual studies into the theological process.
In addition to teaching, Myers’ work at Augsburg University includes directing the Theology & Public Leadership major, the Youth Studies minor, the Augsburg Youth Theology Institute, and the Riverside Innovation Hub. His areas of research include youths’ experiences of God’s presence and activity, how young people construct theology, contemplative youth ministry practices, interfaith youth work, a vocational understanding of young people, and a public understanding of church.
Myers’ first book, Liberating Youth from Adolescence, was released on October 1, 2018 by Fortress Press.
