LSTC mourns death of student Alpha Sabbithi August 22, 2012

The Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago grieves the death of student Alpha Sabbithi, a third-year master of arts in ministry student at the seminary. His body was recovered on August 21 from Maple Lake in the Cook County Forest Preserve near Chicago. No foul play is suspected in his death. Sabbithi’s family had reported him missing early Sunday morning.

“The LSTC community offers its prayers and deepest sympathy to Alpha’s family,” said LSTC Dean and Vice President for Academic Affairs Michael Shelley. “We are stunned by his sudden and unexpected death.”

Alpha Sabbithi was an active member of the LSTC community, taking part in Pero Multicultural Center events, community celebrations, worship, and working on campus for the Information Technology Services Office. He graduated from Carthage College, Kenosha, Wis., where he majored in religion. Sabbithi is survived by his parents, a sister and a brother. Funeral arrangements are being made by his family.

The wake will be held Friday, Aug. 24, at 6 p.m.(order of service begins about 6:30 p.m.) at the Augustana Chapel at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, 1100 East 55th Street Chicago.

The Funeral Service will be on Saturday, Aug. 25, with the Visitation from 9-11 a.m. and the Funeral service at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 9700 Brandt Avenue, Oak Lawn, Illinois (located at the southeast corner of 97th Street and South Brandt Avenue - approximately 2 blocks south and 2 blocks west of 95th and Cicero in Oak Lawn, Illinois.)

LSTC will hold a service of remembrance later this fall.

Counseling services for LSTC students will be available through the Office of the Pastor to the Community.
