Bill and Marjorie Thiel receive Distinguished Service Award May 25, 2010

On May 17, Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago President James Kenneth Echols presented the school’s Distinguished Service Award to Wilbert “Bill” A. Thiel and to Marjorie E. Thiel. LSTC’s board of directors annually presents the Distinguished Service Award to individuals whose commitment to Jesus Christ and whose partnership in the life of the seminary have been exemplary.

“For over 20 years, Bill and Marjorie Thiel have been generous and committed supporters of LSTC,” said President Echols. “It is my great joy and delight that the board of directors has chosen to recognize their support of LSTC by presenting them with the seminary’s Distinguished Service Award.”

Gifts of time and treasure
Active members of Epiphany Lutheran Church in Elmhurst, Ill., Bill and Marjorie Thiel began supporting LSTC in 1988. Their support grew significantly through LSTC’s first major fundraising campaign, Leadership 21.

In 2000, Bill joined LSTC’s Foundation Board of Trustees, the volunteer leadership board responsible for stewardship of LSTC’s endowment funds.

During the Equipping the Saints for Ministry comprehensive campaign, they established The Wilbert A. and Marjorie E. Thiel Endowed Scholarship Fund and made a generous gift to support the work of LSTC’s Youth in Mission Program.

Wilbert and Marjorie Thiel
Wilbert Thiel began his career with Arthur Young and Company, a Chicago CPA firm, and then joined the Chicago Corporation. He rose to the position of CEO of the Chicago Corporation before it was purchased by the North American unit of ABN AMRO. He stayed on for three years as Chairperson and CEO of that unit of ABN AMRO before retiring in 2000.

Marjorie and Bill are longtime supporters of Lutheran ministries. Marjorie became an active supporter of Lutheran Social Services of Illinois through St. Matthew’s Lutheran Home, where family members were residents.  Bill has shared his financial expertise with LSSI in many ways, particularly through the Cornerstone Foundation.
