LSTC Receives $1.5 Million from Tithing Foundation for Stewardship and Tithing Education July 11, 2006

On May 15, the Tithing Foundation transferred assets of $1.5 million and entrusted the fulfillment of its mission to the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. Through this endowed gift, the school will continue the Tithing Foundation's purpose of promoting the practice of proportionate giving and tithing through ecumenical stewardship education for clergy and laypersons.

Pastor Bob Furreboe, executive director of the Tithing Foundation, said "After a two year search to find an organization that would be willing to perpetuate the ministry of the Tithing Foundation, the board of directors decided that

the Lutheran School of Theology Foundation was best able to meet the requirements of the trust established in 1916 by Thomas Kane. We are confident that the LSTC Foundation will be able to expand the ministry in significant ways beyond those which the Tithing Foundation would have been able to accomplish on its own."

In addition to developing and distributing quality materials on tithing and stewardship, LSTC will offer courses, conferences and workshops for rostered and lay leaders, current students and recent graduates.

"The Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago has a long-standing commitment to stewardship education," said Mark van Scharrel, vice president for Advancement. "Through this endowed gift from the Tithing Foundation, LSTC will be able to provide seminary students as well as people in congregations with the materials and training they need to share in new ways the practice and power of tithing."

The Tithing Foundation was founded in 1916 as an ecumenical organization dedicated to promoting the concept and practice of tithing. One of the founding lay persons, Thomas Kane, wrote: "It is my personal belief that God prospers those who honor him by setting aside a definite proportion of their income to his service."
