Student Profile: Zachary Wagner

Degree: M.Div.

I grew up on the northwest side of Chicago. I always enjoyed serving during worship as an acolyte when I was younger and as an assistant as I grew older.

The positive reinforcement that I received from the members of my congregation led me to consider that maybe my gifts could one day lead me to a life in ordained ministry. I wrestled with these ideas throughout high school. But when it was time to choose an undergraduate school I made the conscious choice to avoid religious institutions or a religion major in an effort to challenge the sense of call that I had earlier felt.

As a pre-law major at a large state school it took me only one semester to realize that I needed to more deeply consider my earlier inclinations to pursue ministry. I made the needed changes in my educational track so that I could continue on to seminary when I completed my undergraduate career.

When it came time to choose a seminary, I wanted to leave the city for a more rural setting. Once again it became apparent that God had plans other than mine. For a variety of reasons I decided that the urban setting of LSTC was where I needed to be.

From the first moment I set foot on campus for my prospective student visit, I have felt right at home here. LSTC has been academically challenging and it is through such challenges that I have come to better understand my personal faith and, subsequently, my call into leadership in the church.

LSTC has opened my eyes to a whole new world of biblical and theological study. The community at LSTC is something that I am proud to be part of. From chapel services to gym night to fellowship both inside and outside of the classroom, I have truly seen the importance of a strong faith community.

Every day the true nature of my calling into ministry becomes slightly clearer. LSTC has made this an exciting process. I am thankful every day that God called me here to this wonderful and enriching community.
