LSTC has a stunning chapel and Cantor Dan Schwandt is incredibly talented. I've learned a lot in my first year by experiencing different worship styles – all of them grounded in confessional Lutheran tradition. It's also cool to hear faculty preach. You don't always get that side of their personalities in the classroom. It's great to hear how they approach the text.

Student Profile: Justin Tigerman

Degree: M.Div.

Justin is what's known in seminary circles as a "pipeliner." He came straight to LSTC after earning a bachelor's degree in religion and classic from Luther College. He appreciates the perspectives of the older students in his classes. "I really feel privileged to hear the life experiences of the second career students. They're able to identify which subjects are most important," he says.

LSTC wasn't the only seminary Justin considered. He had scholarship offers from other schools, but wanted to come to LSTC. He is one of the first Presidential Scholars at LSTC. It covers his tuition for the three years of classroom study for the M.Div. degree. "I’m so grateful for this scholarship and to Jan and Ernie Muller, who are the sponsors of my scholarship," he says.

Worship life at LSTC was what significantly persuaded Justin to come here. "LSTC has a stunning chapel and Cantor Dan Schwandt is incredibly talented. I've learned a lot in my first year by experiencing different worship styles – all of them grounded in confessional Lutheran tradition. It's also cool to hear faculty preach. You don't always get that side of their personalities in the classroom. It's great to hear how they approach the text," Justin says.

Ministry classes are the steepest learning curve for Justin. "I find challenging many areas of ministry that others probably have more experience doing, such as the worship and ministry classes. The worship class I had with Dr. Stewart brought a lot together for me: what we do and why we do it."

Justin has discovered a love of biblical studies. "I really didn’t have enough of that in undergrad. I'm planning to do a Biblical Studies Emphasis." He is impressed with how faculty are able to challenge students at multiple levels.

Justin is also considering Ph.D. studies after he completes the M.Div. degree.  "LSTC is a good place for someone considering either option," he says.
