Lutheran seminarians experience the Holy Land

If a picture is worth a thousand words, as the old maxim says, then how many words is an experience? I imagine seminarians from both Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa, and the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC) must be pondering this question following each school’s unique January journey to the Holy Land. Cover story, "Economic disruption and an evolving church," (pp. 20 – 25) is by LSTC alum the Rev. Dr. Kim Beckmann (1984, M.Div.; 1999, D.Min.), who is serving as interim pastor of Augustana Lutheran Church. Alum Pastor Fred Kinsey, and students Meredith Harber, Bekki Lohrmann, Stephanie Berkas, Bridget Thien, and Alex LaChapelle are in a photo on page 22 with the author (and one more person). Alum Pastor Dirk van der Duim (2008, M.Div.) was the photographer.
The Rev. Dr. Mark Swanson, Harold S. Vogelaar Professor of Christian-Muslim Studies and Interfaith Relations, is featured in conversation with Dr. Shauna Hannan, professor of homiletics at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, on the topic of salvation (pp. 18-19).
Professor Emeritus of Christian-Muslim Studies and Interfaith Relations Harold Vogelaar, is quoted in the article "Finding a common word: Virginia dialogues pairs Lutherans and Muslims" (pp.16-17).
The Rev. Dr. David Rhoads, professor emeritus of New Testament, was quoted in the article "Lutheran social services go green" (pp. 34-35).

Dr. Ray Pickett, professor of New Testament, contributed “An economy of grace” to the August issue of the Lutheran magazine (pp. 32-33.)
LSTC-specific articles appear in the Metropolitan Chicago Synod supplement : “Synod supports students at LSTC” (with a photo of Dan Kerr, Miho Yasukawa, and Emily Tveite) and “Understanding our Muslim neighbors.” The latter is about a seven-week series that A Center of Christian-Muslim Engagement for Peace and Justice presented at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Mount Prospect, Ill., which was led by Mark Swanson, Michael Shelley, Carol Schersten LaHurd, and Ghulam-Haider Aasi.
LSTC alum Fred Nelson is also featured in a story in the MCS supplement – named volunteer of the year for his ministry at Stateville Prison, Joliet, Ill. (Download the supplement.)
First year student Megan Sawyer (fall 2011) and her pastor, alumnus Donald Kreiss (M.Div.; D.Min.) are featured in a story in the August issue of The Lutheran magazine (page 43).
Alum Jay Alanis’ appointment as director of LSPS was noted on page 44.
John Roth’s election as bishop of Central/Southern Illinois Synod is noted on page 36.
Alumni news from the ELCA, July, 2011
The Rev. Linda O. Norman (2006, M.Div.) has been appointed ELCA treasurer. She has been with the churchwide organization since 2006, first as controller and then as chief financial officer for the ELCA Foundation. She has been the ELCA controller since February 2011. She has an M.S. in accounting and earned her CPA in 1999. Pastor Norman served Bethel Lutheran Church, Chicago, from 2006 – 2009.
