Covenant Cluster

Within the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), clusters are the structure for cooperation in many areas of theological education. Clusters share faculty and develop specializations through joint planning.

The Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago is in the Covenant Cluster with Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus, Ohio, and Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa. Together the three seminaries relate to and serve the 24 synods in Regions 4, 5 and 6 of the ELCA. Almost half of the ELCA's members and more than 4,000 congregations constitute these synods.

One such cooperative venture is distance learning through online courses for continuing education (CEUs) and lay theological education (personal enrichment, or certification for Synodically Authorized Ministry).

Heritage
In 1962, the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago was formed from the merger of five Lutheran seminaries. Counting its founding date of 1860 from the oldest of its predecessor schools, the seminary prepares pastors, lay professionals and theological educators for the global church.

Heritage
Since 1830, Trinity and its predecessor schools have trained people for vocations of ministry. In 1978, Trinity became the first consolidated seminary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
