African American & Asian Descent Emphasis

The African Descent emphasis prepares Masters students for ministry in the African Descent community. Students are introduced to the whole range of the African Descent religious and theological experience. The emphasis includes course requirements, Field Education/Practicum and optional features that will enhance the growth in faith and competence of the student.

Elective courses may include (two or more courses required):

  • African Descent History
  • The Theology and Ethics of James H. Cone
  • Womanist Theology
  • Pedagogy/Methodology with African Descent Emphasis
  • Theology of Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • Ethics and Politics of the African American Community
  • Black Theology/Womanist Theology
  • Black Woman Faith Stories
  • Introduction to Pastoral Care

Students may also meet the course requirements offered through the Association of Theological Schools (ACTS) or organizations like the Seminary Consortium for Urban Pastoral Eudcation (SCUPE www.scupe.org). For example, some students who desire courses in Black preaching take those courses with SCUPE or at one of the ACTS schools.

Field Education/Practicum opportunities or equivalents include (two or more of the following):

  • Lutheran Theological Center in Atlanta (will receive one course credit)
  • Urban CPE Site in an African Descent community
  • Ministry in Context and/or Internship in an African Descent ELCA congregation
  • Independent Study in African Descent context

Optional features include:

  • Attend African Descent conferences (i.e., Samuel DeWitt Proctor Conference, etc.) workshops, excursions, or retreats
  • Take courses in offsite centers such as the Lutheran Theological Center in Atlanta or the Interdenominational Theological Center
  • Students also have an opportunity to write a comprehensive paper with the Coordinator (Director of the Multicultural Center) and another faculty member in this emphasis with the awarding of a Certificate of recognition and notation on transcript.
