MINISTRY OF WORD & SACRAMENT

Pastors of the ELCA proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ through preaching the Word of God and administering the sacraments according to the Word. They provide care and nurture to others and reach out to those who have not heard about Jesus or to those who have heard and want to further their relationships in Christ. Ordained pastors normally serve in congregations; however, after an initial congregational call of three years, pastors may serve as chaplains, faculty at colleges and seminaries, leaders in social service agencies, in world mission positions, in staff positions at synod or churchwide offices.

A master of divinity degree is a requirement for those seeking ordination in the ELCA.
