MINISTRY, EMPHASIS & CONCENTRATION

Students will find a number of ministries, study emphases and interest concentrations to pursue at LSTC. These areas are summarized with more information provided via hyperlinks.

LSTC’s newly-revised curriculum allows freedom and flexibility for students in both the M.A. and M.Div. programs who desire to concentrate their study in areas of their greatest interest, while preserving a well-rounded program of theological study.

For example, suppose you are a prospective M.Div. student deeply interested in African American theology and ministry and you want to take as many courses as you can in this area. You will notice in the M.Div. curriculum that in addition to free electives (i.e., courses that may be taken in any theological area, either at LSTC or any of the 12 theological schools in Chicago who are members of the Association of Chicago Theological Schools), there are several area requirements (Ethics, Leadership for Mission and Public Life, Communities of Color, Senior Interdisciplinary Seminar, World Religions), with more than one course offered in each area that will fulfill the requirement. Thus, for the ethics requirement you might select a course such as “Womanist Ethics” or “The Theology and Ethics of James Cone.” You might choose one of our several courses in Islam for your World Religions requirement and do a project focusing on the Black Muslim movement in the United States. You might construct a project involving leadership issues in African American congregations as a dimension of your work in the Leadership for Mission and Public Life area.

Thus, whatever your interest (youth and family ministry, pastoral and spiritual care, Hispanic/Latino(a) ministry, rural ministry, women’s studies, etc.), there are ways that you can work with the LSTC curriculum to accomplish your goals, whether you are an M.A. or an M.Div. student.
