ENVIRONMENTAL MINISTRY EMPHASIS

Covenant Group

A covenant group will work with the Emphasis Director, meeting quarterly to discuss environmental ministry and to plan individual programs together in the larger context of a well-rounded program of preparation for congregational ministry.

The Covenant Group will participate in hands-on projects with LSTC's Green Zone to acquire training for work in the parish or community. This group will provide students with the opportunity to share their experiences in the emphasis with the larger LSTC community.

Course Requirements

1. Take one or more core courses from ACTS schools, such as:
Environmental Public Ministry
Greening the Parish
Environmental Science, and Social Policy for Church Leaders
Others may be substituted with the Coordinator's approval

2. Write papers or do projects on environmental issues in three or more classes in the M.Div. or M.A. program, potentially in any of the basic required courses as well as electives. Arrangements will be worked out between the student and individual faculty in conformity with the nature and goals of the course. (No more than two courses in any one division.)

Field Work

Complete one or more of the following options:
Urban CPE in Environmental Ministry
Internship half- or part-time in an Environmental Agency, the other portion in parish ministry
Internship Project on Environmental Ministry
Project in Teaching Parish during one quarter
Field placement for course credit under an agency supervisor and in consultation with Coordinator.

Optional Features

Attend environmental conferences and workshops, excursions, retreats, etc. for practicum credit
Take courses in environmental science at a university in Chicago
Take courses at an offsite center, such as a rural ministry program.

Senior Project

Complete one of the following options:
Senior thesis on environmental issue for three course credits
Senior paper or project for one course credit
Run a conference or workshop
Develop a guidebook or educational materials for the parish
Other options may be considered in consultation with Emphasis Director.

Summative Evaluation

Conducted with the Emphasis Director and perhaps one other faculty member, followed by the awarding of a certificate of recognition.
