Financial Support

The Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago is committed to providing financial assistance to students who have been admitted into the master of arts and master of divinity programs and who demonstrate financial need. Through the support of synods and the Division for Ministry at the ELCA, along with gifts from donors and distributions from endowments, LSTC maintains a generous pool of financial resources that can aid in paying the costs of seminary education.

There are several sources of funds available to students:
Grants
Scholarships
Part-time employment
Loans

Grants
Eligibility for financial grants is determined by the financial needs of the student. The need is defined as the differential gap between a student's assets and liabilities and the cost of seminary education. The seminary is dedicated to providing as much of the tuition costs of the student as possible, again based upon the demonstrated need of the student.

Students are also encouraged to seek grants from other sources such as local congregations which will supplement the financial assistance that LSTC provides. Normally, funds secured by the student will not reduce the amount of the LSTC award.

Scholarships
A number of scholarships are available to students. They include:
Servant Scholarships
Fund for Leaders in Mission Scholarships
Grover Wright Scholarship
Fund for Theological Education scholarships

Employment
The seminary assumes that a normal load of courses requires full-time study. We do recognize that many students find it necessary to seek part-time employment. The Dean of the Community maintains a file of job opportunities on campus. There are many employment opportunities off-campus as well.
