Biography
Craig A. Satterlee
is associate professor at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, where he holds the Axel Jacob and Gerda Maria (Swanson) Carlson Chair in Homiletics. He is also Dean of the Doctor of Ministry in Preaching Program of the Association of Chicago Theological Schools (ACTS). Satterlee received the bachelor of arts degree from the University of Michigan, master of divinity degree and master of sacred theology (pastoral care) degree from Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus, Ohio, and master of arts and doctorate in homiletics and liturgical studies from the University of Notre Dame.
Satterlee
is the author of three books--Ambrose of Milan’s Method of Mystagogical Preaching, Presiding in the Assembly, and When God Speaks through Change: Preaching in Times of Congregational Transition--and coauthor with Lester Ruth of Creative Preaching on the Sacraments. Dr. Satterlee serves as editor of Preaching Helps@ for Currents in Theology and Mission and frequently contributes to both scholarly and ecclesiastical journals. Satterlee’s scholarly interests include the relationship of preaching and areas of congregational life and mission, including liturgy, spirituality, mission, and leadership. He also studies patristic preaching, most notably that of Ambrose of Milan, and the worship of the early church. Satterlee is a member of the North American Academy of Liturgy, Societas Liturgica, and the Academy of Homiletics.
Ordained in 1987, Satterlee served congregations in Upstate New York and Michigan before being called to LSTC. He regularly participates in the ELCA’s Renewing Worship process, leads continuing education events throughout the church, and represents the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) on the Presbyterian Church (USA) Study on the Theology and Practice of the Sacraments. Firmly grounded in parish ministry, Pastor Satterlee spends most Sundays preaching and presiding in congregations of the ELCA.
As a person who is legally blind, Dr. Satterlee has a passion for ministry with persons with disabilities and a unique perspective on the faith, church, and world. He, wife Cathy, and daughter Chelsey live in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood.
