Biography
Kathleen D. (Kadi) Billman is dean and vice president of academic affairs and professor
of pastoral theology at the Lutheran School of Theology
at Chicago. Joining the seminary faculty in 1992, Billman
was named dean in 1999, the first woman to serve in that
position.
Billman grew up in a farming village in Ohio. She attended Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio, where she earned the bachelor of arts degree in 1972. She entered Princeton Theological Seminary in 1973. Deeply interested in urban ministry, after completing her masters of divinity degree at Princeton Theological Seminary, Billman served as the pastor of an urban congregation in Trenton, New Jersey, where she had formerly served as Director of Neighborhood Ministry during her seminary studies. After eight years of full-time ministry as a pastor, Billman returned to Princeton to complete the masters of theology and doctor of philosophy degrees, while serving in a part-time pastoral ministry in another urban, multicultural congregation in Trenton.
The author of several scholarly articles and book reviews,
her "Pastoral Care as an Art of Community" appeared
in The Arts of Ministry: Feminist-Womanist Approaches
(ed. Christie Cozad Neuger, John Knox Press, 1996). In 1999,
her book, Rachel's Cry: Prayer of Lament and Rebirth
of Hope, co-authored with Daniel L. Migliore, was published
by United Church Press. She has been active since its inception in the Chief Academic Officers Society (CAOS) of the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada and is currently co-editing a book entitled, C(H)AOS Theory—A Handbook for Chief Academic Officers: Contexts, Commitments, Competencies, and Choices. An article on “Practicing Pastoral Care as a Theologian of the Cross” is forthcoming.
