Organ music goes international in new Paul Manz concert series

Dane to kick off lunchtime events

A Danish organist will launch a prestigious new series of organ concerts on October 2 at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC).

Named in honor of Paul Manz, the renowned Lutheran church musician, the free monthly series will present artists from Europe as well as local performers. The Ruth and Paul Manz Organ, designed by M.L. Bigelow, was installed in the Augustana Chapel at LSTC, 1100 E. 55th St., Chicago, in 2004.

The midday concerts will commence at 12:20 p.m. and finish at 1:00 on the first Tuesday of each month.

The October 2 guest, Sven-Ingvardt Mikkelsen, is Organist of the Royal Chapel at Frederiksborg Castle, Denmark.

Artistic Director Thomas Wikman will take the bench for the November 6 and December 4 concerts.

“Organ music is a thriving art form in Europe,” says Wikman, who spends part of every summer giving concerts in Italy, Germany, France, Scandinavia and other European countries. “My dream has been to build concert series here in the European style.”

Wikman was founder and, for 30 years, music director ofMusic of the Baroque, a Chicago concert organization that was likewise designed on a European model. Wikman eschewed concert halls to present his programs in historic churches hand-picked for beauty and acoustics.

Collaborating with Wikman on the Paul Manz Organ Series are two LSTC musicians: Professor Mark P. Bangert, a noted Bach scholar; and Daniel Schwandt, cantor to the seminary community at LSTC.
