Dr. Suzanne Hoeferkamp Segovia to deliver Cross-Cultural Lecture June 20

Chicago -- As the United States becomes increasingly multicultural, church leaders are working to incorporate a broader range of cultural traditions in ministry. The Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago offers a resource to support these efforts: Suzanne Hoeferkamp Segovia will discuss theology and art from a Latin American perspective in “A Divine-Human Encounter at the Cross Road of Creation,” on June 20, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. in the Common Room at McCormick Theological Seminary. A reception will follow the lecture.

The Cross-Cultural Lecture is intended to provoke theological reflection and cross-cultural dialogue among pastors, students, and laypeople from a variety of cultural backgrounds.

Suzanne Hoeferkamp Segovia is an independent scholar who holds a Ph.D. in systematic theology from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. Born in Guatemala, she grew up in Mexico, where her father was a professor at a Lutheran seminary. She has taught theology courses in Spanish and English at the Lutheran Seminary Program in the Southwest and the Brite Divinity School Hispanic Summer Program, and has led projects that incorporate Latin American traditions in ministry. Hoeferkamp was program director of the Tertulias Pastorales program, which coordinates pastors’ efforts to serve Latino communities in ways that are responsive to Latino traditions and realities.

She developed Cruzando, the Latin American theological foundations that ministered to the 2006 Youth Gathering for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Westminster Johns Knox Press recently published Hoeferkamp’s English translation of the Spanish Diccionaro IIustrado de Intérpretes de la fe. She is currently writing a book on hermeneutics.
