Lydia E. Rivera Kalb to Head Multicultural Center at LSTC

| Chicago --- The Rev. Lydia E. Rivera Kalb has been appointed to a three-year term as director of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago’s Multicultural Center, beginning October 1. The center will strengthen and coordinate the seminary’s commitment to multicultural ministry by focusing on multicultural leadership development and preparation. The center will also work closely with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s Vocation and Education unit to promote and coordinate the commitment to developing leaders for multicultural ministries throughout the church. |  |
Pastor Kalb, who is bilingual, holds a degree in Hispanic Ministries from Mundelein College/Loyola University. She is a graduate of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (1979, M.Div.) and Wagner College, Staten Island, N.Y. Ordained in 1979, Kalb has served congregations in the ELCA’s Metropolitan Chicago Synod, ministering to West Indians, Latinos, European Americans, and African Americans. She recently served as interim dean of the community and interim director of the Office of International Student Affairs at LSTC. Kalb’s extensive service to the church at large includes being a member of the commission whose work resulted in the formation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in 1988. LSTC’s Multicultural Center is the result of a partnership with the ELCA. The goals of the Multicultural Center include developing and strengthening lay schools of theology for African Americans, Latinos, Chinese and Arabs in large cities in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa. It will encourage partnerships between LSTC and the Lutheran Seminary Program in the Southwest, the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia and the Lutheran Theological Center in Atlanta. The Center will strengthen the Latino doctor of ministry and Ph.D. programs at LSTC. It will assist with recruitment of students of color for all degree programs at LSTC and provide assistance, support and mentoring for them at the seminary.

The Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago prepares women and men to proclaim the good news of God’s love in Jesus Christ to all people. Its approximately 350 students come from all parts of the United States and from around the world to study in one of five advanced degree programs. Graduates become pastors, other church leaders, and university and seminary professors.
