Donors are encouraged to carefully consider all aspects of making a gift before donating and advised to consult with a trusted tax professional, financial planner or attorney before finalizing gift arrangements with the seminary.
Gifts of cash, checks, credit cards
Outright gifts of cash, by check or credit card, are the easiest gifts to make. They are also tax deductible in the year given. LSTC also gratefully accepts pledges – gifts that are paid over time. You can make a pledge commitment and set up a payment schedule that works best for you.
To make a gift by credit card or e-check, you can give now using our secure online giving payment solution.
Gifts made by check (payable to Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago) should be mailed to:
Gifts to the Annual Fund or those which are undesignated will be used to support the seminary’s highest priorities. If you wish to designate your gift to be used in a certain way, be sure to indicate your preference both on the check and in a cover letter, or contact a member of the Advancement staff to draw up a gift agreement.
Including the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago in your will or other estate planning vehicle provides significant support to the seminary and reduces the tax burden on estates and inheritance while continuing your philanthropic legacy. Gift of securities
Giving stocks and bonds that have increased in value (and that you have owned for more than a year) provides even greater tax benefits than giving cash.
Not only is the market value of the securities deductible (subject to applicable limitations), but you also avoid paying the capital gains tax on the appreciation.
The value of the securities gift is the median of the high and low market price of the stock or bond on the date of your gift. If your stock is held in custody with a brokerage firm or bank trust department, you can make a direct transfer of the securities from the custodian firm or bank.
