| SSM-601 | Being & Doing Church In The X-Box Era |

| The goal of this course is to help participants (re)imagine what it means to be a missional leader in the 21st century, within a church that has been called to participate in God’s mission, by engaging them in a conversation about some of the most critical questions being asked in the church today: What in the world is God up to? What is God up to in our communities? In our congregations? In my life? We will explore the biblical and theological foundations of the missional (and, by extension, the emerging) church conversation towards the goal of helping participants articulate their own answers to these questions. Also, attention will be given to strengthening practical skills for missional leadership within a congregation. Themes will include: 1) learning to ask purposeful questions, 2) assessing and understanding a particular context, from a missional perspective, 3) “doing theology” with congregations in context, 4) cultivating in others an imagination for doing ministry in new and contextually relevant ways, 5) making use of participative, playful processes, and 6) creating an openness to change, for the sake of mission, within a congregation. |

Targeted for pastors and education staff, in the field or in training, this course will enable students to create their own curriculum for educational ministry in the parish. Topics covered will include Christian education as outreach, new membership classes, development of Sunday morning adult forums, education and the arts and vocation in daily life. Projects assigned will be practical, and transferable to the students’ current or future ministry site. |

We will seek to answer this question by looking at different materials from the New Testament: Paul, Matthew, Acts, 1 Peter, etc. We will examine the impelling force, the style of mission and its relation to the twenty-first century. | |

| SSM 603 | Faith Convictions, Preaching, and Mission |

The faith convictions preachers and listeners bring to the Sunday sermon shape both preaching and congregational mission. This course aims to help participants identify and articulate their own faith convictions, recognize different faith convictions operative in their ministry contexts, and gain practical skills both in leading conversations about people’s faith convictions and preaching to people with faith convictions other than their own. This course is a seminar and will emphasize discussion rather than lecture. It is provided by LSTC for upper level M.Div. students and pastors seeking a continuing education course, as well as participants from the ACTS D.Min. in Preaching program. |

En este curso exploramos juntos los contextos en que se requiere nuestro cuidado pastoral tanto de individuos como de comunidades. Estudiaremos como los diferentes contextos culturales y socio-políticos afectan los objetivos, metas y estilo del quehacer pastoral. Nos enfocaremos particularmente en los diversos contextos de la pastoral hispana/Latina en los Estados Unidos. Desde esa perspectiva cubriremos las áreas mayores de cuidado pastoral, tales como familia, comunidad, congregación y las circunstancias personales y comunitarias a las que somos llamados en nuestra vocación a responder pastoralmente. |

Interfaith Realities: Meeting Our Muslim Neighbors |

This course will help participants begin the journey of understanding Islam and our Muslim neighbors. Its aim is to foster a respectful and hospitable approach to Muslims, which includes not just learning about them and their religion, but from them. The course will include field trips in the Chicago area so participants can meet and converse with some of our Muslim neighbors in their places of worship and community gathering. |
