Inauguration of the Ralph W. and Marilyn R. Klein Chair of Old Testament

On September 15, LSTC will inaugurate its newest endowed chair, a gift of the Rev. Dr. Ralph W. and Mrs. Marilyn R. Klein. Dr. Klein will preach at the 11 a.m. inauguration service. A community lunch follows the service. Esther Menn, professor of Old Testament and director of LSTC’s Advanced Studies Program will be the chair’s first occupant.

At 2 p.m. Dr. Peter Machinist, Hancock Professor of Hebrew and Other Oriental Languages at Harvard University, a former student of Klein’s, will deliver the inaugural lecture.

Klein “returns the favor”

For over 40 years, the Rev. Dr. Ralph Klein, Christ Seminary-Seminex Professor Emeritus of Old Testament, has been a beloved and admired professor forming seminarians for ministry. His dedication to the vocation of teaching and preparing leaders for the church takes on new meaning September 15, 2010, when LSTC inaugurates the Ralph W. and Marilyn R. Klein Chair in Old Testament.

Klein came to LSTC in 1983 after teaching at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis and Christ Seminary-Seminex. “We are so grateful to LSTC for accepting the ten of us from Seminex after the controversy at Concordia had forced us into exile. When one receives a gift, it is important to return the favor,” he said. Since his retirement in 2008, Klein has continued to teach several classes on the Pentateuch at LSTC and is curator of the LSTC Rare Books Collection.
