LSTC announces endowed funds to honor Mark P. Bangert and Ralph w. Klein.

Two influential and deeply respected professors will retire from full-time teaching at LSTC at the end of the current academic year. Mark P. Bangert, John H. Tietjen Chair of Pastoral Ministry: Worship and Music, and Ralph W. Klein, Christ Seminary-Seminex Professor of Old Testament have taught in Chicago since 1983, first as Seminex operated from LSTC, and then as members of the LSTC faculty after the ELCA was formed.

To honor their work at LSTC and to move the seminary forward in ways that are meaningful to each of them, the seminary is establishing endowment funds named for each of them.

The Mark P. Bangert Augustana Chapel Endowment Fund will provide an endowed position for the Cantor to the Seminary to ensure the continuation of high-quality worship and liturgy at LSTC.

The initial fundraising goal is $100,000.

The Ralph W. Klein Ph.D. Fellowship for Biblical Studies will continue Dr. Klein’s legacy of shaping the next generation of biblical interpreters and scholars.

The initial fundraising goal of $100,000 will provide partial or full tuition plus a living stipend for the recipient, as funding allows. It will be renewable for up to 6 years upon satisfactory progress through the Ph.D. requirements. The fellowship will normally be awarded to a Ph.D. student in Biblical Studies – with a preference to Old Testament scholars – based on demonstrated academic excellence and financial need.

To contribute to these funds, send your gift to Office for Advancement, Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, 1100 East 55th St., Chicago, IL 60615. Please write “Bangert Fund” or “Klein Fund” in the memo line of your check.
