LSTC creates endowed chair in New Testament to honor Herbert Chilstrom.

by Michael Klinefelter, assistant vice president for advancement

During his 2006 Hein-Fry Lecture, Herbert Chilstrom shared his lifelong love of the Bible. Expressing his concern for the way people use the Bible, he quoted Joseph Sittler:

“. . .the Bible must be read from its Center, from its witness of Jesus Christ, not its edges, trying to use the Bible for purposes it was not intended.”

The Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago is proud to claim Herbert W. Chilstrom
as an alumnus through one of its legacy institutions – Augustana Seminary, Rock Island, Ill. Our brother in Christ is a superb model of the faithful way in which Lutherans engage the Bible, confessing Jesus Christ in a personal way. Through his ministry as pastor, teacher, synodical bishop, and finally as the first presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Dr. Chilstrom is one of the significant leaders of contemporary Lutheranism – and his scholarship continues to this day.

By creating the Herbert W. Chilstrom Chair in New Testament at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, we seek to honor Bishop Chilstrom’s 50 years of ministry, which began in 1958 when he graduated from Augustana Seminary. Through a permanently endowed faculty chair, LSTC will continue to attract and retain the very best faculty for teaching the New Testament to future generations of church leaders and teachers.

As part of the seminary’s comprehensive campaign, Equipping the Saints for Ministry, we seek to raise $1.5 million in permanent endowment to provide for the Chilstrom Chair in New Testament. The Chilstrom Chair will join seven other endowed chairs at LSTC as we seek to fully endow the core faculty disciplines: biblical studies, systematic theology, church history, and pastoral ministry.

Through your partnership in this effort LSTC will continue to attract and support excellent faculty to teach biblical studies and will honor our pastor, bishop, and friend Herbert W. Chilstrom.

To learn more about the Herbert W. Chilstrom Chair in New Testament contact Michael Klinefelter at 773-256-0724, or email mklinefe@lstc.edu.

To contribute to the Chilstrom Chair endowment fund, make checks payable to The Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, with “Chilstrom Chair” in the memo line.
