"Everyday Surprises: The Parables of Jesus" Bible Study Series by LSTC Faculty Member Audrey West Appears in Lutheran Woman Today
Posted Sep 1, 2004
Audrey West, Associate Professor of New Testament at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, explores ten of Jesus' parables in her Bible study series, "Everyday Surprises: The Parables of Jesus" appearing in Lutheran Woman Today from September 2004 through August 2005.
Readers of the magazine asked for more challenging Bible studies, and Lutheran Woman Today called on West, who is known at LSTC for her lively and challenging courses in Greek and New Testament. West uses parables from Matthew and Luke,, including "The Unforgiving Servant" (Matthew 18:23-35), "The Ten Bridesmaids" (Matthew 25:1-13), "The Rich man and Lazarus" (Luke 16:19-31) and "The Profligate Father" (Luke 15:11-32) and others. West has also developed study resources for "Everyday Surprises," available through Augsburg Fortress Publishers.
In anticipation of the study's release, West led introductory Bible studies around the country, using the materials she developed. "These were our best events ever," said series editor Nancy Goldberg. "We're getting calls each week telling us how much life this series has brought to their Bible study group. This study is approachable and thought-provoking."
Lutheran Woman Today is a magazine for all women of the church, with a circulation of approximately 130,000. Its editorial mix of articles, theological reflections, and devotions lift up the mission of the Women of the ELCA: to mobilize women to act boldly on their faith in Jesus Christ.
