LSTC student receives Beatitudes Society Summer Fellowship

Posted Jun 2, 2011

Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC) master of divinity student Sarah Rohde has received a paid Summer Fellowship from the Beatitudes Society. She will be serving at The Center for Faith and Community Health Transformation in Park Ridge, Ill., June 6 – July 29, 2011. Rohde recently completed her second year of a four-year program at LSTC. She is a member of Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

The Beatitude Fellowships seek to help seminarians strengthen their leadership skills and deepen their commitments to faith and public service. The fellowship includes work in a social service organization and weekly collaboration with the other fellows.

Combining health and faith

“I was drawn to The Center for Faith and Community Health Transformation because its work combines two of my deepest passions: health and faith. I believe our Christian tradition is rich in resources for health and holistic living, and yet I have become quite concerned about the lack of emphasis on health in pastors, congregations, and our culture at-large,” Rohde said. “I hope this summer fellowship allows me to learn more about how to engage and empower people to see their faith as an impetus for healthy living and political engagement.”

Rohde will be working with a coalition of congregations in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago. The congregations recently received a grant to hold faith and public health round table discussions on childhood obesity in Logan Square. Rohde will plan and lead the round table sessions and collect and record the stories that are shared. She will also participate in interfaith dialogues on health, assist congregations with their public policy initiatives, and be a part of leadership development workshops.

Beatitude Society Summer Fellowships

Twenty seminary and divinity school students received paid Beatitudes Society Summer Fellowships to work with organizations at the intersection of faith and public life, such as Bread for the World, Interfaith Worker Justice, and Faith in Public Life. They will meet weekly with a local mentor to reflect theologically on their experiences and participate in small group study to help them learn to articulate a public faith. Summer Fellows will also receive media training to hone their public speaking skills.

The Beatitudes Society develops and sustains emerging progressive Christian leaders at seminaries and divinity schools who will advocate for justice, compassion and peace; reclaim a Christianity that welcomes all people, especially those at the margins; and articulate a Christianity that dares to speak and act for our fragile planet and our most vulnerable citizens.
