Posted Jun 10, 2008
On May 19, the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago recognized Janette and Ernie Muller for their distinguished service and generous support of the seminary since 1984. President James Kenneth Echols presented the award at LSTC annual leadership dinner at the University of Chicago's Quadrangle Club.
LSTC's Board of Directors annually presents the Distinguished Service Award to individuals whose commitment to Jesus Christ and partnership in the life of the seminary have been exemplary.
President James Kenneth Echols presented the award, noting their practice of greeting people with a hug. He added, "Jan and Ernie have hugged LSTC with their love and generosity for many years and, on behalf of the entire seminary community, I extend to you its deepest gratitude."
In her response to the award, Jan Muller recounted the influences of their parents, who taught them about service, and their pastors, who are "prophetic, equip the saints for ministry, not afraid to talk about money and challenged us and others to be faithful service and to generously share our resources."
Jan was elected to the LSTC Board of Directors in 1984 and has held a position on the board or the Foundation Board of Trustees ever since then. She currently chairs the Trustees, and the Strategic Planning Leadership Team. Ernie retired from a career in finance for Everpure, Inc., a subsidiary of Culligan International. He has used his expertise to assist with nine building projects and to serve on local and synod church councils. He has helped stabilize and establish endowment funds for congregations and other charitable organizations. Ernie and Jan are members of the comprehensive campaign Honorary Steering Committee.
The Mullers are members of Hope Lutheran Church, Moose Lake, Minn., where they have recently become involved in prison ministry.
