Youth in Mission Announces Dates for 2007 Summer Youth Programs

Posted Oct 3, 2006

Heather Wallace, Program Coordinator of Youth in Mission ministry at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, has announced the dates for the 2007 summer youth programs. Serving Christ in the World, a three-week seminary experience for current high school sophomores and juniors, will be held June 17 - July 7, 2007. Beyond Belief, an opportunity for high school youth groups to come to Chicago to do service and build relationships with the Chicago residents they serve, is running in a new year-round format.

Serving Christ in the World is a program for youth who would like to know more about God and themselves and ways they can use their gifts in service to others. During the three-week program two weeks are spent on the Lutheran School of Theology campus, engaged in study, activities, dialogue and reflection. One week is spent in Mexico City, Mexico, providing an experience of learning and sharing faith in a global context. Application deadline is February 19th, 2007.

Previously, Beyond Belief consisted of a LSTC planned and led week-long mission trip opportunity in Chicago. In the future high school youth groups from across the country will continue to journey to Chicago for their own Beyond Belief experience. By creating this self-sufficient format, the Beyond Belief program will be more flexible and can run year round. Youth leaders and pastors will be able to fit the time and projects to cater to the needs of their youth both financially and spiritually. LSTC will still offer minimal cost housing, service project contacts, devotional outlines, and the opportunity to talk to seminarians about vocation and seminary. LSTC believes that these changes not only make the program self-sustaining but allows an opportunity for a greater number of groups to participate.

Information on both programs including applications and registration forms are available at www.lstc.edu/yim/ or by calling 800-635-1116 ext. 725.

Youth in Mission was originally funded by a generous grant from the Lilly Endowment, Inc., for the purpose of encouraging young people to explore their gifts for ministry and to consider a profession serving others through the church.
