Workshops

The following workshops will be held
concurrently on Friday, September 22 from 11:00 a.m-12:20 p.m.
and will be repeated on Saturday, September 23 from 9:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m.

1
Women of Faith: Keepers of Tradition: Catalysts for Change
What are women doing to assert their rightful dignified place in society? How is the struggle of women in general helping to shape the efforts of all for a saner and more harmonious future?

Presenters:
Dr. Carol Schersten LaHurd; Dr. Aminah McCloud

2
Sharing Memories of the Past: Healing Perspectives
It is a well-known adage that those who forget history are bound to repeat it, but can historical memories ever be shared or dealt with in such a way they no longer constitute an impediment to healing and wholeness?

Presenters:
Dr. Robert Schreiter
Dr. Mahmoud Ayoub
Dr. Roland Miller

3
Contemporary Dislocations: Knowing the Things that Make for Peace
In a time of endangered values, when tyranny provokes terror and war trumps diplomacy, when religion gets perverted into radical politics, and the poor matter only because they embarrass the rich, what are the things that make for peace and where does one look for them?
Presenters:
Dr. Malika Zeghel
Dr. Nelly van Doorn Harder
4
Our Sacred Texts: Resources for Healing and Wholeness
How do our “texts” square with the choices we make about the way we structure our lives politically, socially and economically? How do we contend when tensions arise between two authoritative texts, one “divine”, the other quite “human” (e.g. under the Constitution of the United States)?
Presenters:
Dr. Ghulam Haider Aasi
Dr. Mark Swanson
5
Spirituality/Sufism: Paths to Peace and Harmony
The spiritual or inward journey of the heart is known and celebrated in both the Christian and Muslim traditions. How can these rich legacies of spirituality help us to "own our pasts" or "vision the future” in ways that offer hope, healing and understanding in today’s anxious world?
Presenters:
Dr. Scott Alexander
Dr. Marcia Hermansen
6
Living as Minorities: New Hope for Visioning the Future
For centuries Christians have lived as minorities in Muslim lands. Increasingly Muslims live as minorities in “Christian” lands. How might this new social dynamic help shape a brighter and more secure future for all? What are these voices from the margins saying and how significant is it for the wellbeing of the whole society?
Presenters:
Ms. Ayesha Mustafaa
Rev. Lewis Scudder
