LSTC Voices
Lutheran theology and practice offer essential elements for Earth-honoring and Earth-healing faith. Yet Lutherans themselves often fail to make the connections of the sacramental life to "greening" church and society. Ethicist, teacher, and writer Dr. Larry Rasmussen addressed this "disconnect" in his lecture, "Waiting for the Lutherans." Dr. Larry Rasmussen served as Reinhold Niebuhr Professor of Social Ethics at Union Theological Seminary, New York City, from 1986-2004. His current work focuses on moral and theological reorientation in response to humans’ unsustainable uses of natural resources. Rasmussen received the Joseph Sittler Award for Outstanding Leadership in Theological Education and the Burnice Fjellman Award for Distinguished Christian Ministries in Higher Education. He is the author of Earth Community, Earth Ethics, winner of the 1997 Grawemeyer Award in Religion. His other works include Earth Habitat: Eco-Injustice and the Church’s Response (as co-editor) and Ethics for a Small Planet: New Horizons on Population, Consumption, and Ecology (co-author). In addition, he has published widely in journals and magazines. The Heritage Lecture series is designed to provide a contemporary perspective on the Lutheran tradition. This year’s lecture is part of Earth Year at LSTC, a year-long observance and renewal of the seminary’s commitment to care of creation.
