Johnny Bernard Hill.Dr. Johnny Bernard Hill, Assistant Professor of Theology at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, introduced his new book, The First Black President: Barack Obama, Race, Politics, and the American Dream, to President Obama’s hometown Chicago community of Hyde Park on February 10.

This Black History Month event held in Augustana Chapel at LSTC was sponsored by McCormick Theological Seminary’s Center for African American Ministry and Black Church Studies and the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago Multicultural Center.

"Waiting for the Lutherans" 2009 Heritage Lecture

Lutheran theology and practice offer essential elements for Earth-honoring and Earth-healing faith. Yet Lutherans themselves often fail to make the connections of the sacramental life to "greening" church and society.

Ethicist, teacher, and writer Dr. Larry Rasmussen addressed this "disconnect" in his lecture, "Waiting for the Lutherans."

"Blacks in Green: The Principles of Village-Green-Building"
Earth Year Lecture by Naomi Davis, Sept. 30, 2009

Naomi Davis.Environmental activist, Naomi Davis' vision of the emerging green economy of mixed-income micro-villages in black communities have caught the attention of the City of Chicago and Great Lakes area planning groups, which can help make her vision a reality. Davis has founded Blacks in Green (BIG) to promote that vision of making an oasis right where we live.

On September 30 at 7 p.m., Davis presented her ideas in the lecture "Blacks in Green: The Principles of Village-Green-Building" at LSTC. The free lecture was part of Earth Year at LSTC, a year-long focus on care of creation including sustainability, environmental justice, congregational activism on behalf of the earth, and theological themes related to creation.

Inauguration of the Gordon A. Braatz Chair in Worship Lecture: "On the Four Gospels and Christian Assembly" by the Rev. Dr. Gordon Lathrop,

Rev. Dr. Gordon Lathrop.On Wednesday, September 23, the Rev. Benjamin M. Stewart was installed as the Gordon A. Braatz Assistant Professor of Worship at LSTC during an 11 a.m. Eucharist celebration. At 2 p.m., the Rev. Dr. Gordon Lathrop, Charles A. Schieren Professor Emeritus of Liturgy at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, presented a lecture on the relationship between the four gospels and Christian worship in the first century and now, “On the Four Gospels and Christian Assembly.”

James Kenneth Echols Prize for Excellence in Preaching Competition,
April 30, 2009

Carrie B. Smith, Joshua Ebener, Kirsten Fryer.This annual preaching competition, named in honor of LSTC President James Echols, was established in 2007 and is funded by a long-time generous supporter of LSTC. Joshua Ebener, Kirsten Fryer and Carrie B. Smith preach on the text: Romans 12:9-21.

Robert C. Dykstra, April 21, 2009.Dr. Robert C. Dykstra, professor of pastoral theology at Princeton Theological Seminary, delivered the keynote address and the April 21 worship message during LSTC's Youth in Mission's Pastoral Care for Youth Conference.

2009 World Mission Institute, March 26-27, 2009

March 26-27, the Chicago Center for Global Ministries presented the 2009 World Mission Institute, "Spiritual Ways: Spirituality, Meditation and Mission," at LSTC.Dr. Beverly Lanzetta.


Dr. Anthony Gittins, who holds the Bishop Ford Chair of Mission Theology and Culture at Catholic Theological Union, delivered the first keynote address, "Spirituality and Mission: Embodiment, Ecology and Experience of God" on March 26.

Dr. Beverly Lanzetta, a research scholar at the Feminist Research Institute - Religious Studies at the University of New Mexico, delivered the March 27 Keynote: Global Spirituality: The Emerging Heart of Faith in a Multi-Religious World.

The Rev. Dr. Barbara Rossing, LSTC professor of New Testament, responded to the lecture.

Dedication Day - October 22, 1967

LSTC President Herman Stewart and LCA President Franklin Clark Fry. On October 1,1967 LSTC mailed an audio album introducing the new Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago to Pastors of the Lutheran Church in America.
