An ordained pastor of the ELCA, Mark Swanson teaches in the areas of Christian-Muslim studies and early/medieval church history, and directs the Interfaith Emphasis at LSTC. Before coming to the great ecumenical and interfaith meeting-place that is the city of Chicago (and the neighborhood of Hyde Park), Swanson taught at Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minn.,(1998-2006) and at the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo, Egypt (1984-1998, with frequent visits since). His research interests include the history of Christian-Muslim relations, medieval Egyptian church history, and early Arabic Christian literature.
Swanson has recently been busy as the Arabic Christian section editor for Christian-Muslim Relations: A Bibliographical History (Leiden and Boston: Brill, 2009-). The first volume was published in late 2009. His book The Coptic Papacy in Islamic Egypt (Cairo and New York: American University in Cairo Press), will be published in 2010. It is Swanson’s hope that students and teachers together learn to encounter Christians of other times and places, as well as people of faith from traditions other than their own, with hospitality of spirit and a readiness to learn in order to grow as theologians and leaders of faith communities in our religiously diverse world.
An ordained pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Mark Swanson came tot the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago from Luther Seminary where he taught Islamic studies, Christian-Muslim relations, Arabic language and early church history. Before that he served for 14 years on the faculty of the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo, Egypt. His research interests include the history of Christian-Muslim relations, medieval Egyptian church history, and early Arabic Christian literature.
