The Floy L. and Paul F. Cornelsen Director of Spiritual Formation & Pastor to the Community

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago is a seminary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America that prepares women and men to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ by serving in a wide variety of ordained and lay ministries in congregational, teaching, and other settings throughout the world. Located in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, the seminary has approximately 350 students and 18 full-time faculty members. It is affiliated with the University of Chicago and the Association of Chicago Theological Schools, a consortium of 11 theological seminaries.

In the 21st century, the seminary recognizes that the spiritual formation of students, in addition to their academic/theological and professional formation, is an essential dimension of preparation for ministry. The Floy L. and Paul F. Cornelsen Director of Spiritual Formation & Pastor to the Community will be responsible for providing collegial and collaborative leadership and expertise in the seminary’s program of spiritual formation.

In addition, the seminary also recognizes the importance of providing pastoral ministry to students, faculty, and staff as they teach, learn, and serve. The Cornelsen Director of Spiritual Formation will also function as Pastor to the Community, reaching out and offering encouragement, guidance, and support to those on the seminary campus.

The Floy L. and Paul F. Cornelsen Director of Spiritual Formation & Pastor to the Community will serve a five-year, renewable term. Initial election will be by vote of the Board of Directors upon recommendation of the President working with an Advisory Search Committee. Renewal of term will be by vote of the Board of Directors upon recommendation of the President in light of an evaluation conducted by an Advisory Evaluation Committee. The Floy L. and Paul F. Cornelsen Director of Spiritual Formation and Pastor to the Community will have faculty status and will report to the President.

RESPONSIBILITIES

SPIRITUAL FORMATION OF STUDENTS

1. Collaborate with the faculty on the development and implementation of a comprehensive approach to the spiritual formation of M.Div., M.A.M. and M.A.T.S. students in particular through courses, retreats, spiritual direction, devotional disciplines, etc.
2. Coordinate and staff the Spiritual Friends Program.
3. Offer a limited number of credit and non-credit experiences (courses, retreats) for M.Div., M.A.M., and M.A..T.S. students in particular in the area of spiritual formation.
4. Be available to M.Div. and M.A. students in particular to discuss personal faith and submit issues, maintaining strict confidentiality.
5. Prepare and submit annual budgets related to the seminary’s program of spiritual formation.

SPIRITUAL FORMATION OF LAY AND CLERGYPERSONS

6. Develop, organize, coordinate, and staff as appropriate a Center for Spiritual Formation that will offer workshops, seminars, and retreats for rostered leaders and lay people.

PASTORAL MINISTRY IN THE SEMINARY COMMUNITY

7. Maintain a public and visible presence on the campus, cultivating relationships of trust and pastorally engaging members of the seminary community.
8. Provide counseling on a limited basis and refer members of the seminary community to external resources as appropriate.
9. Collaborate and consult with the Dean of the Chapel regarding ways in which pastoral ministry and communal worship intersect and support one another, and the periodic involvement of the Cornelsen Director of Spiritual Formation & Pastor of the Community in worship leadership.
10. Serve on the Community Life Committee and the Standing Committee on Worship.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Rostered member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
2. Significant experience and skill in pastoral ministry.
3. Advanced educational work and experience in the area of spiritual formation. Degrees and/or certificates preferred.
4. Ability to articulate the importance and role of spiritual formation in preparation of women and men for ministry in the church.
5. Ability to articulate the importance and role of spiritual ministry for the ministry of the whole people of God in the world.
6. Interpersonal, collegial, and group facilitation skills.
7. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality in appropriate situations.
8. Significant administrative and supervisory skills.
9. Commitment to theological education as a vital part of the church’s ministry.
